Facilities are certified to Uptime Institute Tier III and Tier IV. The distinction is worth understanding rather than treating as a grade. Tier III is concurrently maintainable: components and distribution paths can be serviced without disrupting the IT load, which means planned maintenance does not require an outage window. Tier IV is fault tolerant: it adds fully redundant subsystems and multiple active distribution paths, so the facility sustains an unplanned failure without impact to the load.

Geographic diversity is the property that matters for disaster recovery. Replication between facilities is only meaningful if those facilities do not share a failure domain — the same power grid, the same flood plain, the same metropolitan network.
